Christian Spiritual Formation for Education
(for parents and teachers)
Module 1: Meta-Narratives in Education
Stories, Ideas and Education
We live our story as part of grand meta-narratives. The stories and ideas within these meta-narratives are powerful as they shape and form us. Whether consciously or unconsciously, they influence our image of God, self, others, the world, and creation and way we relate to them. Our education systems are not neutral but deeply religious in nature as they are rooted in these narratives that profoundly affect our children.
In this unit, we will
⇒ Examine some prevailing stories and ideas that drive our lives and education and its impact on our children’s spiritual formation.
⇒ Examine stories and ideas behind the National Education Policy (NEP), National Curriculum Framework (NCF).
Stories, Ideas and Christian Education
In this unit, we will:
⇒ Critically examine how our ideas of Christian education intersect with cultural narratives.
⇒ Expound on the Biblical framework for Education: Trinity-Creation-Fall-Redemption and Restoration.
⇒ Engage in “Restor(y)ing” – reimagining and restoring the cultural narratives and worldviews that underpin our lives and education through Biblical framework for education
Module 2: Foundations of Christian Education
Restor(y)ing Our Image of God in Education
The stories we believe form our idea or image of God. This image is foundational to all aspects of life, including education, as it affects everything. It profoundly influences the way we relate with God, ourselves, others, and the world around us. Life and education are all about these interdependent relationships.
In this unit, we will
⇒ Examine and reflect on our professed and operational image of God and its impact on the lives of our children
⇒ Discern our healthy and unhealthy images of God.
⇒ Identify and evaluate the hidden images of God impressed through Education.
⇒ Explore the ways in which we can identify, reflect on, and embark on an interactive journey with Christ for the healing of our unhealthy image of God.
Restor(y)ing Our Identity in Education
Each one of us play a unique role in our story on earth. This role is shaped by who we perceive ourselves to be. Our image of self reflect how we relate with our self and others. Education plays a major role in forming our Identify. God’s Great Love Story teaches us that we are His beloved, but fully embracing this truth and living from its core are two distinct challenges. Restor(y)ing our image of self is crucial for growing in freedom and growing into what God created us to be.
In this unit, we will
⇒ Explore how our ideas of self forms us.
⇒ Examine the role of education in the formation of our Identity.
⇒ Reflect and examine our desires and embrace our calling and vocation based on our uniqueness.
⇒ Explore ways to nurture and care for our soul.
Partnering with God in Education of our Children
The Good news of the kingdom of God is an invitation to participate in the divine life and partner with-God, here and now in all aspects of life including education.
In this unit, we will
⇒ Explore the Good news as shared life with-God in all aspects of life including education.
⇒ Explore creating space to listen, discern and respond to God’s voice in life and education.
⇒ Practice listening to and playing with our children for deeper connections.
⇒ Explore Education as Discipleship for Christlikeness.
⇒ Envision a balanced spiritual life based on the life of Jesus and its implication on education.
Module 3: Education for Christian Spiritual Formation
Vision for a With-God Education for Spiritual Formation
God shares his vision and invites us to partner with him. Our response to this invitation is crucial to the path of fleshing the dreams of with-God education for our children. To that end, based on the With-God (Biblical) perspective, in this unit we will
⇒ Develop a VIM (Vision, Intention, and Means) for a With-God Education.
⇒ Reframe the aims and purpose of education, the nature of learners, the role of teachers, curriculum and teaching-learning methods from a With-God Education perspective
With-God Education Framework for Subjects
All things were created by Him and for Him, and in Him all things hold together. With that respect, all learning is about God and his creation. So, when every subject is learnt from God’s perspective, it fulfills the purpose for its creation – the purpose being to know Him intimately, to love Him deeply, and to serve Him faithfully, thus bringing glory to Him in all things.
In this unit, we will
⇒ Explore how each subject can be a means for spiritual formation.
⇒ Un-hide the beauty, wonder, goodness and truth in each subject.
⇒ Design and develop the purpose, learning objectives, teaching-learning experiences, and assessment from a With-God Education perspective for units of all subjects (Languages, History, Geography, Math, Science, Arts, Sports and Technology)
⇒ Plan and prepare annual plans, unit plans and lesson plans.
⇒ Project work
